At MergelRijk you’ll discover the most beautiful Cave in Valkenburg and you really experience everything about caves and marl. The rich history of the marl caves comes to life along the way through beautiful marl and sand sculptures.
You will learn how the marl layer was created about 65 million years ago and you will experience how the block breakers removed the marl from the mountain and thus the marl caves were created. You can see what the marl and caves were used for in the past and for which the special rock is still used. One of the highlights that can be seen is a life-size sculpture of the famous painting the ‘Nachtwacht’, carved entirely from marlstone.
But there isn’t only a lot to see, there is also plenty to do in MegelRijk! You can make your own souvenir from a real block of marl. MergelRijk is a cave for adults, also very nice for children!
MergelRijk is an underground paradise for children where they can experience and do a lot, especially made for children . With a treasure hunt book they go through the cave and discover, for example, a jaw of a mosasaur in the fossil museum. They can work on a marl block in the cave workshop, look for fossils in the marl quarry and enjoy a film of the famous Dutch sand wizard. A real DinoWorld has been made especially for children in MergelRijk, in which you come face to face with dinosaurs!
A visit with children takes about 1.5 hours.

During a retreat in Maastricht, the Netherlands.
Eva and I dove headfirst into the enigmatic Maastricht marl caves - a true underground odyssey.
Each cave visit was a new adventure, immersed in history and gritty ambiance.
These man-made labyrinths, once a refuge for Jews fleeing to Belgium during WW2, have tales of lost travelers literally etched in their walls.
From a 19th-century tourist attraction to todayโs subterranean mushroom kingdoms, these caves are steeped in tales as deep as their corridors.
Capturing this dark majesty became my obsession.
With eva.arents , my partner in crime with a flash gun โก๏ธ, we became shadow dwellers.
We lagged behind the group for the perfect shots, annoying our guide.. ๐ฌ sorry!
After hearing the guideโs history rundown, I directly knew what I was going to do- Film developing with mushrooms! ๐๐ค๐ฝ๐ธ
Faced with the challenge of photographing shadows and echoes. But the results? Pure, unadulterated magic. A visual feast from the depths!๐ค๐ฝ

De groeten uit kerststadvalkenburg! Wat een geweldige dag hebben wij gehad. We begonnen met de kerstmarkt.gemeentegrot en daarna gingen we door naar de kabelbaanvalkenburg. Eenmaal boven heeft Aliz nog getubed, zijn ze van de rodelbaan geweest en hebben we lekker gelunched. Volgens mijn navigatie was het een goed idee om via boven naar het mergelrijk te lopen, maar dat bleek toch een hele trip (lees: ik kon nog net niet aan het zuurstof, bergie op bergie af ๐๐). Het was het wel waard, want wat was het daar ook leuk! Natuurlijk klommen we ook weer terug door de bergen, want Aliz wilde wel heel graag met de kabelbaan nog naar beneden. โs Avonds nog de parade en afgesloten met sushi.
